Description
The Marsh Ensign 4 is an economical sewage treatment plant which complies with BS EN 12566-3. With a population equivalent of 4, this treatment plant is suitable for garden rooms, small workshops and other non-domestic applications. This plant is NOT suitable for dwellings as the minimum population equivalent is 5 for this situation (up to and including a 3 bedroom house).
The Ensign is easy to install, reliable, and cost-effective for ongoing operation and maintenance.
The plant initially operates by anaerobic digestion in the primary chamber, then by aeration in the second chamber, where diffused air and mobile filter media ensure complete treatment before the treated water flows to the final settlement chamber, final effluent is then discharged to a drainage field or watercourse.
This Ensign sewage treatment plant can be installed in granular or concrete backfill, depending upon ground conditions. Both backfill options require a concrete base. As-dug material or soil is not a suitable backfill material. If the water table (at any time of year) rises above the proposed base of the tank, it must be installed in concrete. If the ground is not free-draining (eg.clay, silt or similar), the tank must be backfilled with concrete. Failure to select the correct backfill material for the ground conditions will invalidate the manufacturer's warranty.
As ground conditions and water table levels can change over the expected life of the tank, we strongly recommend at TFE that all tanks be concrete-backfilled to prevent future issues.
Benefits of the Ensign:
- Option of internal or external air blower
- PVC pressure pipe to diffuser
- High-specification bio-media
- 32mm Larger diameter sludge return
- Stabilising feet for easier transportation and installation
- Unique "keying in" lip helps anchor into concrete or granular backfill

Options:
OUTLET: Gravity is suitable when the final effluent from the treatment plant can run downhill to discharge to a drainage field or watercourse. Pumped outlets are used when there is insufficient fall for a gravity discharge or if the discharge point is higher than the treatment plant.
INVERT / INLET: This is the depth from ground level that the inlet pipe from the property enters the sewage treatment plant. This depth is to the bottom of the plant's inlet pipe, and a deeper inlet means the tank will be deeper in the ground and the tank neck will be extended. If needed, retrofit riser kits can be purchased at additional cost. The maximum inlet depth is 1500mm.
AIR BLOWER: The Ensign can be specified with either an internal or external air blower. The internal air blower sits inside the neck of the tank, whilst the external air blower comes with a housing and 4m of air hose, allowing the blower to be sited at ground level (or elevated if needed). Pumped outlets are supplied with external housings as standard to protect the air blower from flooding in the event of a pump blockage or failure.
WHISSPURR NOISE REDUCTION UNIT: The Whisspurr is an Acoustic Vibration Reduction Unit which reduces the vibration and noise from the air compressor. Ideal for fitment when the tank is close to a property or boundary or a noise-sensitive area. The Whisspurr is purely mechanical and doesn't use electricity.
Discharge Quality:
