Heating Oil Tank FAQs

How does an oil heating tank work?

An oil-fired heating system works much like a gas boiler, but instead of gas, it relies on stored heating oil as its energy source. When your heating system turns on, the oil is pumped from the tank and ignited in the burner.

The resulting hot gases pass through a heat exchanger — often a metal coil — transferring energy to the water circulating through the system. This heated water is then sent through radiators or underfloor pipes to warm your home. It can also be directed to your taps and showers for hot water on demand.

Can I place a heating oil tank indoors?

It is possible to install a heating oil tank indoors, but there are strict safety and building regulations you’ll need to follow. To begin with, the tank must be housed in a non-combustible, fire-resistant chamber and is usually best placed on the lowest floor of the property, such as a basement or ground-level utility room.

There are also key spacing rules to consider — the tank should be at least 1.8 metres away from any non-fire rated features, including eaves, doors and windows. Most indoor setups are also limited to 3,500 litres in capacity, and bunded tanks are typically required to prevent leaks or spills.

While indoor installations can offer protection from the elements and reduce visual impact, they come with more complex requirements, so it’s essential to consult a professional before moving forward.

How long do heating oil tanks last?

On average, a heating oil tank lasts between 15 to 25 years, depending on the material, installation quality, and maintenance. Plastic tanks tend to have a slightly shorter lifespan than steel, but they are resistant to corrosion. Regular inspections and servicing can help extend the life of your tank and prevent costly issues.

Can I put diesel in my heating oil tank?

Yes, diesel can be used in a heating oil tank as a temporary substitute, especially in emergency situations when standard heating oil isn’t available. However, it’s not recommended for long-term use.

Diesel tends to be more expensive than heating oil and burns slightly hotter, which can increase wear and tear on your furnace or boiler components over time. While it is possible to mix diesel with heating oil in small amounts, it’s generally best to stick to kerosene-based heating oil to maintain efficiency and avoid potential damage to your heating system.

If you ever need to use diesel, it’s worth checking with your equipment manufacturer or a heating engineer to make sure it won’t cause any long-term issues
