Chemicals should always be stored safely and in compliance with COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations. The right storage solution depends on the type of chemical and the environment in which it’s used.

Storing hazardous chemicals: Hazardous chemicals should be kept in secure, purpose-built chemical stores that are well-ventilated, weather-resistant, and clearly labelled. These stores should be positioned away from direct sunlight, ignition sources, and areas prone to flooding. It’s also important to separate incompatible substances (e.g. acids and alkalis) to prevent dangerous reactions.

Storing flammable or corrosive chemicals: Flammable substances should be stored in flame-retardant units that are clearly marked and grounded to prevent static discharge. Corrosive chemicals should be stored in corrosion-resistant containers, ideally with bunded flooring or sump bases to contain leaks.

All storage should be regularly inspected and maintained to ensure continued safety and compliance.

Only chemicals from the same hazard class should be stored together. Mixing incompatible substances can cause fires, toxic gases, or explosions. Here's a basic guide:

- Flammables with flammables (e.g. petrol, solvents)
- Oxidisers stored separately – never with flammables or organics
- Acids and bases stored apart – they react dangerously
- Toxics kept isolated, in ventilated, locked cabinets
- Water-reactives stored dry and away from any water source
