Heating Oil: The Complete Guide

Winter is fast approaching, and the UK is currently facing an energy crisis; many households and families and trying to discover the best way of keeping themselves warm this Christmas.

UK Department for Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) found that the most used heating method used by the British public was gas central heating at 78%. In contrast, only 5% used the counterpart oil as their central heating.

With the new Energy Prices Bill already in force, people are looking at ways to use and store alternative energy, like heating oil safely.

What Is Heating Oil?

Heating oil is a fuel used in heating systems, such as boilers and space heaters. Heating oil is usually delivered by tanker by an oil supplier. However some Petrol filling stations will also stock carry it.

The main difference between heating oil and gas oil is that it has a higher smoke point. This means that it burns cleaner when compared with different types of fuels.

How Does Heating Oil Work?

Heating oil is used for its heat-generating properties, whether residential or commercial. As a result, the boiler or heaters interior air temperature rises rapidly after the burners. As a result, it'll stay warmer in the winter.

Using heating oil has many benefits. For one thing, it’s generally cheaper than electricity.

In addition, if you heat with oil, you won't be inconvenienced by blackouts.

What Usage of Heating Oil Does a House in the UK Use in a Year?

The annual energy consumption of a typical UK household is approximately 26,999 kWh. This is equivalent to anywhere between two and three tanks' worth of heating oil, or about 1,700 to 1,800 litres.

By scheduling 500 litres of heating oil once every three months during the winter, you can easily track how long that amount lasts and adjust your upcoming supply accordingly. Oil consumption may be affected by a variety of circumstances.

Among these are:

●      The size of your home

●      How many people live in your home

●      How long your home's heating system has been on for

●      If your boiler is in good condition

Regulations for Storing Heating Oil

Where you choose to keep your oil is subject to a different set of rules.

Home Storage

You must comply with local building regulations if you want to put an oil storage tank on your property. It is best to check depending on which area you live in and what rules you need to follow.

However, storage containers with a capacity of 3,501 litres or more are subject to the rules governing commercial properties.

Business Storage

If the container at your company can carry 201 liters or more of a specific type of oil, you are required to comply with oil storage rules.

If your oil tank is capable of holding 201 liters or more of:

●      Bio-degradable oils

●      Gasoline

●      Diesel

●      Biofuels

●      Kerosene

●      Vegetable oil and plant-based oils

Public institutions, including universities, hospitals, churches, and nursing homes, are subject to the same rules as private corporations.

Farm Storage

Again, storing oil on farms and agricultural land comes with its rules.

If you plan to keep more than 200 litres of agricultural fuel oil on your farm, you'll need to either construct a new storage facility or make major alterations to an existing one.

You must take reasonable measures to prevent and contain spills wherever fuel oil is stored on your property, such as installing an alarm to warn of overfilling.

Labeling, leaks, and spills

You must label your tank correctly, clearly give instructions on what to do if you have a leakage or spill, and have a registered person to install and carry out periodic risk assessments on your tank.

During the risk assessment, it will become apparent if you need a bund- also known as secondary containment.

It is imperative that the bund:

  1. Has a storage capacity of 110% of the tank size
  2. The bund does not let oil or water through or escape

Using a steel-bunded heating oil tank is advised, as they provide watertight bunded areas and are more secure than plastic tanks..
