Diesel vehicles require AdBlue to pass the DEF test. For companies with large fleets of vehicles, particularly those working in the transport industry, it makes sound commercial sense to store AdBlue on site.

AdBlue is a solution of urea (32.5%) and deionized water (67.5%), which is injected into the exhaust of diesel vehicles to significantly reduce the level of nitrous oxide released into the atmosphere.
Typically, AdBlue consumption is around 2% to 6% of fuel consumption, so a vehicle will use between two and six litres of AdBlue for every 100 litres of diesel. So for a large fleet of HGVs, that would be a lot of AdBlue and a lot of trips to the local garage!
While car owners will usually just pick up a bottle of AdBlue at the nearest forecourt, AdBlue storage tanks are commonly used by businesses with fleets of diesel vehicles, to fill up HGVs and LCVs on site.
As well as the convenience of cutting out trips to the garage, storing AdBlue on site means businesses can benefit from bulk pricing and avoid fluctuations in cost, by buying when the price is lower.
While not particularly hazardous, AdBlue is very polluting to surface water and groundwater. So it is essential that it is stored in the right way.
AdBlue can also degrade quickly if not stored correctly. Contaminated AdBlue can cause costly damage to a vehicle and downtime, which is bad for business.
AdBlue should be stored between 0 and 30C and out of direct sunlight. It can freeze at -11C.
Tanks used for storing AdBlue should be compliant with ISO 22241, DIBT, BS EN ISO 9001:2008.
The Environment Agency has guidelines for the safe storage of AdBlue. When installed correctly, all Tanks for Everything’s wide range of AdBlue storage tanks meet these guidelines, as well as meeting the needs of businesses of any size.
The Environment Agency guidelines state:
- AdBlue should be stored in a bunded tank (ie one with secondary containment)
- The container, pipework and dispenser equipment should all be suitable for use with urea
- The dispensing area drainage is isolated from surface water drains
- You have a trigger nozzle with an auto shut-off to dispense AdBlue
- You have appropriate emergency equipment on site to deal with large or small spills
- You have an emergency plan and suitable training for dealing with spills or other accidents
