Ensuring that your septic tank system is kept in good condition is essential not only to keep your neighbours onside but also to help to prevent environmental harm and costly damage to the system itself. Whilst it is important to ensure that it is properly maintained and serviced and inspected regularly, there are also several ways that you can help to keep it in tip-top condition and reduce the risks of damage, making it last for longer.

Look after the Drain Field

Your septic tank’s drain field is an important part of the septic tank system. It is important that it is installed in the right place, but also that the area is properly looked after. It is important to ensure that the liquid can drain easily in this area, so try to avoid flushing any other water in this area. The ideal solution is to create separate water drainage routes from your home into different areas – for example, a separate drainage route for rainwater, and a separate drainage route for hose water.

You can also look after this area by keeping trees and plants from growing here as the roots of these plants can affect the drainage of the water in the drain field as well as cause damage to the piping system.

It is also important to make sure that you do not park vehicles on the drainage area as this can also affect the drainage of the water and affect the septic tank system.

Flushing

One factor that can make a massive difference in the health of your septic tank system is by keeping an eye on what is being flushed through it. Try to limit this just to sewage and water, avoiding the intended – or unintended flushing of other objects such as sanitary products, baby wipes, hair strands, cigarette butts, food, and such like. These can physically clog the system and cause blockages and prevent the system from working. You can use drain guards over the plug to filter out any larger objects that may obstruct the system.

It is also important to bear in mind that certain chemicals in the wastewater can cause an imbalance of the bacteria within the septic tank, making the biodegradation process less effective. You should, therefore, try to limit the number of chemicals that you are flushing through the system – and check that those that you are using are ‘septic tank friendly’.

The septic tank process involves using bacteria to break down the waste products in the water. It is, therefore, advised that you try not to flush anything that is not biodegradable through the system. It is good to know, however, that toilet paper is biodegradable!

Get it Inspected

Getting your septic tank inspected regularly is an important part of the maintenance process. This is an important way to keep on top of the condition of your septic tank, ensure that it is functioning well and that you are aware of any problems early on. Of course, if you find out about any issues, you should get them fixed as soon as you can.

It is recommended that you get your septic tank pumped roughly every two to three years but inspected annually to check that everything is working properly.

Water Efficiency

Another important factor in helping your septic tank system stay in good condition for longer is to reduce the strain that is put on it. This means being as economical as you can with your water – which also great for the environment. Try to conserve as much water as you possibly can and reduce pressure on the system, through measures such as:

  • Taking showers instead of baths
  • Using high-efficiency showerheads
  • Using washing machines a few times each week rather than several times on the same day
  • Using high-efficiency toilets and only flushing when necessary

If it is well-maintained, a septic tank can last for years, especially if you pay close attention to its condition. By following some of these tips, you can help to ensure that it is in fine working order for decades.
