Can I Drink Water from a Water Storage Tank?

Do I Have a Water Storage Tank

If you’re moving in to a new property and aren’t sure if you have a water storage tank, it’s worth trying to find any documentation or blueprints for the property to show you if you have one. If you have a well on your property or live in particularly remote, rural areas, it’s likely that you’ll have a storage tank.

Do I Need a Specific Tank for Drinking Water Storage?

Yes. It’s very important that a storage tank that contains drinking water is suitable for potable water. It must be made of non-toxic and corrosion resistant materials, as well as having a tight lid that seals to prevent dirt, bacteria and insects getting into the water.

What are Potable Water Tanks?

Potable water tanks are a form of water tank that are specially designed to hold drinking water fit for human consumption. They are often made from materials specifically designed to come into frequent contact with drinking water such as stainless steel, polyethylene or sometimes fibreglass.

How Can I Check the Condition of My Tank?

It’s important to keep a regular maintenance schedule for your water tank to make sure it’s in good shape, as well as regular records. By keeping records, you can get a better understanding of the quality of your tank and fix problems sooner rather than later. Check your tank visually by looking for cracks or leaks, rust on any metal fixtures and any build up of sediment or limescale in the tank or the pipes. It’s also important to test your water regularly for contamination. You can also tell the condition of your tank by the taste and smell of your water. If there are unusual smells or tastes from the water itself, this may indicate an issue that needs addressing.

How Can I Clean My Drinking Water Tank?

To drain your drinking water tank, you first need to drain the contents out. If your tank already has large volumes of water in, you need to dispose of the contents properly, so you avoid flooding or soil erosion. Once the tank is completely empty, begin cleaning the interior thoroughly, paying special attention to any difficult to reach corners where dirt and germs may accumulate. Once you’ve finished cleaning your tank, it’s important to make sure you thoroughly clean out any remaining dirt and any cleaning chemical residue left in the tank. Fill your tank with clean hot water and empty several times, using a hose or pressure washer to get any particularly stubborn areas, finally filling with clean water and leaving for around 30 minutes to an hour to ensure the last of the bleach or soap has been collected. When you’re sure there’s no soap or dirt left, empty this final tank full of water and you’re ready to use your tank again.

Contamination, What You Need to Know

Water contamination is a serious issue that can cause major health problems for anyone who consumes it. Unfortunately for water tank owners, there are a variety of potential contaminants to look out. It could be microbial contamination such as bacteria or other dangerous organisms that grow in water that lead to diseases such as Cholera, Legionnaires' Disease/ Pontiac Fever or E.coli. It could also be chemical contamination through improper cleaning or bleach/soap being left over from previous cleaning sessions, as well as runoff from industrial agriculture that has leaked into the water. It could also be as simple as insects or animals getting in through unexpected gaps or fractures in the tank.  Regular testing and cleaning can reduce the possibility of drinking contaminated water, and effective filtration systems can help remove impurities before drinking.
